Facebook GUI

First, designing of the home page. I don’t know others’ thoughts, but to me, when I open Facebook in a new computer, I mean my account information doesn’t exist, at my first glance, it’s difficult for me to find where the Log In is. The former home page, almost half of it is New Function, and the rest is Sign Up. However, the Log In just lives on the top of the page with a small size. To a common user, these three parts have the same value. Therefore, I design the new home page based on this characteristics. I divided the whole page into three main parts. Without mouse action, there are just three titles. When you move your mouse on any of them, the new menu will come out. For example, when you put your mouse on the Sign Up, the page changes as it is showed in the picture.

And then is user page. In my opinion, the traditional page has three parts. On the left is function choice. On the middle are the top stories of your friends. On the right is the advertisement. According to the operation mode of Facebook, we have to keep the advertisement here. However, I seldom use the left function. So I hide them and move the advertisement to the left. If you click more information about function choices, the list will come out instead of the advertisement. Another thing I changed is the middle. Commonly, the stories of your friends will confuse you because the cut off rule is not clear. Thus, I divide each story. Meanwhile, I add a new function which can change your own background with your photo collections. It not only personalizes your own page, but also makes each story clear. The last change on the page is the list of friends. I hide names of them, and I just left their photos. If they are online, they are in color, or they will become black and white.
